Big steps for babies

Labor and delivery returns to GCMC

In May, we are celebrating mothers and the love and hope they bring all month long. This year, Mother’s Day takes on a new significance with the return of labor and delivery to Geisinger Community Medical Center with the opening of the new Childbirth Center in October.

The $15 million maternity center will feature a holistic approach to labor and delivery focusing on a low-intervention model. Certified nurse-midwives, physicians and the entire care team will partner with mothers and families within a nurturing environment to provide an individualized birth experience while still having access to a Geisinger NICU only minutes away should the need for greater, more advanced care arise. This approach has already proven to be a success with new moms at Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital, where it has been in effect since 2016, as well as Geisinger Lewistown Hospital.

With the new space at GCMC scheduled to open this fall, support from the community has been paramount to its completion. Thanks to many gifts from the community, employees, foundations and others, new moms will have a safe, holistic and family-centered experience as they bring new life into the world.
